Long catwalks, bright lights and high fashion are common features of any fashion show, but at tonight's "GOLD: For the Fierce & Fabulous," San Diego State models will strut their stuff to raise money for the homeless.
The American Marketing Association, Philanthro Productions and Delta Sigma Pi will host the event at 10 p.m. at the Prospect Bar and Lounge in downtown La Jolla to raise money for the Monarch School.
"I wanted to find a cause that touched my heart and that I felt would touch others," vice president of Community Service for AMA Dustin Meister said. "I searched for a cause that would motivate others into action."
The Monarch School, located in downtown San Diego, is committed to providing homeless and at-risk children with education while caring for their basic needs.
"We selected the Monarch School because there are a lot of people who need education that don't have it," Meister said. "The school is looking to move to a larger facility and we hope to help make this possible."
More than 2,200 children in San Diego are currently homeless, according to the Monarch School's Web site. Today, more than 100 children between the ages of 7 and 18 are enrolled in the school. The school's mission is to increase the number of students enrolled and decrease the number of homeless kids.
Doors open at 9 p.m. for the show, which features a promotional live broadcast from Channel 93.3 radio station and music from DJ Mahjestik of San Diego's Jammin' Z90.3, in addition to the fashion show.
"Traditionally, Thursday night is College Night and one of the biggest nights in La Jolla, so we just wanted to utilize the typical college crowd to raise money for a great cause," Meister said. "People who might be going out anyway can have a great time and give something back."
Freddy Saluna of Philanthro Productions, a nonprofit organization, said there will also be great giveaways during the show, including restaurant certificates, clothing, a Sector 9 skateboard and a basket filled with San Diego Chargers merchandise.
